English Translation Of Architectural Text From The Perspective Of Text Type Theory

In China,the demand for translation service is increasing with China's frequent international cooperation and exchange.According to Report on China's Translation Services,the proportion of Chinese-English translation began to outnumber that of English-Chinese translation in China since 2011,and the proportion of Chinese-English translation is on the rise.The materials in the text are related to urban planning and architectural design.The text covers architectural terms and relevant architectural concepts and techniques.In addition,the text refers to some historical and cultural backgrounds and aesthetic effect of architecture.Theoretically,the Chinese-English translation of this text has a demand for some specialized knowledge,e.g.,the accurate translation of architectural terms and related expressions,and it also emphasizes the acceptability,namely,whether it can conform to the target readers' thinking mode and acceptance ability.The material adopted in this task is a text of practical writing.From the perspective of Text Type Theory,this paper discusses English translation of practical writing about urban plan and architectural design.The source text features on the informative function,with expressive function and operative function as secondary functions.According to the research,various methods are to be used to represent the informative function and secondary functions in target text,such as ' identifying' method,'adoptive'method etc.Moreover,the author incorporates varied translation techniques,like restructuring,addition,specification etc.,to make the main content explicit.In addition,some cohesive devices are added in line with the conventions of English to achieve the cohesion and coherence in target text.This paper consists of five chapters,including the description of the task,specific process of the task,the theoretical framework,case study and the conclusion.To some degree,the research result proves it is feasible and helpful to apply Text Type Theory to the translation of practical writing.
