The translation of military historical works not only enjoys high historical research value, but also can help readers understand the military history and related policies of one country. The book, Post-war Japan as a Sea Power: Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience and the Making a Navy, expounds the navy expansion in post-war (1952-2004) Japan, with its subjects covering military, history, politics and social life.On the basis of the English-Chinese translation practice of Chapter Five, the author explores the major issues and difficulties in the translation process at the level of lexicon, syntax and discourse, which include the translation of Japanese proper nouns, some difficult words, long sentences and the accomplishment of cohesive discourse. Aiming to address the above difficulties, this translation project presents specific translation strategies. In regard to the translation of Japanese proper nouns, the author adopts the principle of transliteration and complying with the conventional expression. Amplification, omission, conversion and negation are applied to deal with the translation of some difficult words. As for the translation of English long sentences, such techniques as altering word order, division of sentences and changing passive voices are utilized. Besides, grammatical and lexical devices are two helpful methods for discourse cohesion. Finally, the report summarizes the translation techniques for English historical works. The author hopes that the report will be of some value for future translation and study of similar texts.
