A Report On Long Sentence Translation In Scientific Texts

With the development of science and technology, translation of scientific text is becoming more and more important. Scientists and engineers use the objective language to elaborate the natural phenomena and characteristics in the scientific text.The complexity of its language is different from that in literature in that the use of long sentences is the most significant characteristic of scientific texts. Translation of long sentences is comparatively difficult. Therefore, it is particularly important to master the translation methods and use them to solve problems in translation practice.Although excellent translation can promote the spread of advanced science and technology,inappropriate translation can be a hindrance to it. There are conspicuous differences between Chinese and English,which have brought about some difficulties to the translation work. Moreover, scientific text translation has its special requirements for the text as well. Therefore, it is undoubtedly of critical importance to translate long sentences in scientific texts into appropriate Chinese.Based on the latest research of meteorological book Consumption-Based Approaches in International Climate Policy, this paper mainly focuses on the translation strategies of long sentences in scientific texts. The study can be divided into five chapters: the first chapter demonstrates the background and structure of the report; the second chapter describes the contents of the project; the process of the project is mentioned in the third chapter; the fourth chapter, as the main body of the report, poses some problems in the translating and proper translation strategies to solve these problems. It has been proved that in the actual translation process, by means of the splitting, reversing, using dashes or inserting brackets, the translator can effectively solve the problems in translating long sentences in scientific texts. The last chapter makes a summary about the whole research.
