In this translation report, the translation material is extracted from Chapter Three Presidential Weather of the book The Weather Factor which belongs to informative texts on popular science of meteorology with various topics and abundant information employed to spread meteorology knowledge. The Weather Factor provides various cases proving influence of weather on different fields such as American president elections, the war, sports and transportation, and Presidential Weather discusses the relationship between weather and the presidency. In this chapter, compound sentences is a hard nut to crack in terms of the understanding of source texts and the building of target texts. Finding an effective way to resolve this difficulty is a major topic for this report. Now many academic researchers have devoted to exploring the use of Newmark's communicative translation theory in the translation of scientific and technology texts or informative texts. However, few deal with the translation of compound sentences. This chapter is a preferable case for both translation practice and theoretical study for compound sentences. In this report, Newmark's communicative translation theory is adopted by combining with some specific cases to discuss five translation methods for compound sentences, which proves that communicative theory is appropriate for the translation of compound sentences in informative texts. It is expected that the results of this study might be of some help for some translators in translating compound sentences in informative texts. This report is composed of four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction to the book and significance of the translation practice and a description of the process of the translation practice, including preparation before translation, tanslation process and proofreading after translation. Chapter Two focuses on the communicative translation theory and translation principles for compound sentences in informative texts. Chapter Three discusses the translation methods of compound sentences in informative texts from the perspective of communicative translation theory with the cases in Presidential Weather. Chapter Four gives a summary of this translation report, including both findings and limitations.
