This thesis is a translation report taking chapters 18 to 20 as the source text from a British novelist Mary Gaunt's A Woman in China. This part centers around the narration of the history and culture during the last decades of Imperial China and records local customs and geographical features, etc.A Woman in China is an important component to study the sinology for overseas. The chapters 18 to 20 mainly describe what the woman has experienced and seen on her way to Beijing, whose language is plain and mainly narrative, covering a large number of terminologies such as the official titles, names of places and costumes, etc.According to the language characteristics of the original text, the author introduced equivalent effect theory proposed by Chinese translator Jin Di as guiding principle of this practice report.Under the guidance of the equivalent effect theory, the thesis aims to make the original text and translated text equivalent in semantic, stylistic and cultural aspects. It is also aimed at making the reaction of the source text readers be equivalent to that of the target text readers. In order to achieve this propose, proper translation strategies were chosen correspondingly in translating chapters 18 to 20.The thesis consists of five chapters:introduction of project, preparation before translation, introduction of the theory, case analysis and conclusion.Among these, the introduction mainly consists of resources, significance of the project and structure of the report;Preparation before translation contains two parts:text analysis, search and reading of parallel texts, relevant literature retrieval and reading;Case analysis, the core of this report based on equivalent effect theory, analyzes the translation strategies on lexical level, then syntactic level and some cultural-loaded expressions;Last part is a summary of the whole translation process, including experience and the unsolved problems and the translation report. On the macro guidance of Jin Di's equivalent effect theory, this translation report adopts the literal translation, literal translation with notes, free translation, transliteration and other translation methods. The author not only considered language factors, but also cultural factors when translating so as to make the translation appropriate, natural, and equivalent as far as possible by taking advantages of target text language.Last but not least,The author also hopes to provide some valuable references for further relevant transalation practice.
