Banquet Interpreting Practice Report

With the reform and opening up and rapid development in economy,golf has sprung up in the Chinese market and developed fast as an industry.The Chinese government actively promoted healthy and fast development of golf industry to meet the ever-growing demand of golf lovers.That made golf,a high-end consumption,received attention from more people.Golf is not only a sport but also a good economic language and social interaction.The author has the honor to be an interpreter at Suzhou Jinji Lake Golf Club during the period from June to September in 2016.This report is an analysis and summary of the practice of interpreting for the general manager of Suzhou Jinji Lake Golf Club when he met the Scottish coach of Jinji Lake Golf Academy for the first time at a banquet where they communicated and discussed work and cooperation at the Golf Academy.The report offers the solutions to some technical problems the interpreter encountered in the process of interpreting task such as long and complicated sentences,and emphasizes on the strategic issues like anticipation and explanatory interpretation as well.Meanwhile,this paper discusses banquet etiquette such as eating timing for the interpreter,language style,catering culture of both parties and toasting culture in China.This paper also puts forward the importance of three factors in interpreting process:background knowledge,anticipation and change of roles.By analyzing the interpretation task,the paper pointed out problems the author encountered and corresponding solutions and strategies,and put forward suggestions for improving interpreting competence.
