A Practice Report On Liaison Interpreting

CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition is an important event in Guilin in recent years.Many countries,cities and districts attend this exposition.It is also an important platform for China and ASEAN member countries to strengthen tourism exchange.Laos,as a member country of ASEAN,was also invited to attend this event in 2017.The author,recruited by Guilin Convention and Exhibition Bureau,served as the liaison interpreter for the meeting between officials from Guilin Convention and Exhibition Bureau and Ministry of Information,Culture and Tourism of Laos during the 2017 CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition.The main purpose of this meeting was to invite the Laos to participate the 2018 CAEXPO Tourism Exhibition and to take turns to be the Guest Country of Honor in 2018.This report is based on the author's interpreting practice for this meeting.First of all,it briefly introduced the basic situation of the interpreting task,then described the author's advance preparation,and also elaborated the interpreting process and the performance evaluation of this task.Due to the temporary and semi-formal characteristic of this meeting,the author used specific examples to analyze the challenges faced in this interpreting task,including the visibility of interpreters,inadequate preparation,etc.,and proposed corresponding solutions.In addition,the interpreting strategies and methods used by the interpreter in this interpreting task are analyzed with examples,including addition,simplification,and omission,and self-repairing.By analyzing the practice of interpreting,the author recognized her own deficiencies in interpreting.Finally,she summed up the experience of interpreting practice and put forward suggestions for future interpreting study.
