Liaison interpreting has a long history. It is the earliest form of interpreting,as well as the most widely used one. With the acceleration of the globalization process, countries and regions have benefited from increasing political, economic and cultural exchanges. As the catalyst of cross-cultural communication, interpreter inevitably encounters various cultural conflicts. Therefore,on the premise of having perfect awareness of the context, interpreter should pay attention to the cultural information which may bring communicative disorder during communication, and express the source language information in appropriate way,so as to achieve cross-cultural communication and negotiation. The theory of Linguistics Adaptation is proposed by Verschueren in his Understanding Pragmatics. Here are three key words of the theory: variability, negotiability and adaptability.Variability refers to the diversity of language expression.Negotiability means language choosing is based on certain principles and strategies.Adaptability emphasizes that language should be chosen according to specific context and communicative purpose.Based on the liaison interpreting practice of American investigation group visiting Xiangxi Prefecture,Hunan Province, the author first gives a brief introduction of the background, definition and characteristics of liaison interpretation, then analyzes the content and difficulties of the task before summarizes the cultural conflicts and communicative obstacles in liaison interpreting. The emphasis is made on the coping tactics.Under the theory of Linguistics Adaptation and with the experience of the task, the author attempts to propose coping tactics of cultural conflicts. The last chapter is conclusion. The author hopes to take the practice as a chance to explore coping tactics of cultural conflicts and improve interpreting capacity.Meanwhile, the author also hopes this report could provide references for related studies on liaison interpreting.
