A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Beautiful Hunan(Excerpt)

With the enhancement of China's economic strength,the tourism industry is growing rapidly.As the quality of C-E translation of tourist materials will have a key impact on the development of tourism industry,it is of great importance to face and solve translation problems,especially those related to cultural aspect.The thesis is a translation practice report,which takes the fifth chapter of Beautiful Hunan as the translation source text to discuss the C-E translation strategies of cultural tourism texts.As the purpose of this practice is to present featured Hunan local cultures to target readers,and arouse their interests in travelling Hunan,while the translation requirements for the translator are to skillfully ease Chinese-western culture conflicts,focus on target readers reading experience,and arouse their interests,therefore,the author of the report writes this translation practice under the guidance of Skopos theory of Hans.Vermeer.The report mainly consists of four chapters,namely,description of translation task,description of translation process,case analysis and conclusion.Firstly,the author gives a detailed introduction of the translation task,including research background,source text,as well as the translation theory.Secondly,she describes the whole translation process,covering translation preparation,implementation and proofreading.Then she analyzes specific problems confronted in the translation process in a classified way.In the translation,the author finds that the source text is characterized by cultural-loaded words,covering customs,names of Chinese dishes,and function words,usually without corresponding vocabulary in translation;the sentences are usually carefully balanced,sometimes in the form of poems,sayings and librettos with a variety of figures of speech.Therefore,under the theoretical guidance of Skopos theory,the author summarizes the translation strategies based on the practical situations in terms of culturally-loaded terms,featured sentences,and quotations,mainly involving literal translation,free translation,filling-up translation,creative translation,conversion,combination,omission and amplification.Lastly,the author summarizes the gains and deficiencies in the translation practice.The thesis aims at promoting the splendid Hunan culture to the outside world,helping western readers to correctly perceive the connotation of Chinese culture,arousing their interests in travelling Hunan,and thus offer a hand in developing Hunan tourism industry.
