China's economic development has entered into the era of internationalization and commercialization.The economic exchanges between China and African countries are increasing year by year,and their cooperation is becoming more and more frequent.Legal translation is becoming increasingly important in legal exchange and foreign trade.What criteria should be adopted in the translation of legal texts? How to use translation theory to guide translation practice? This thesis aims to overview the questions concerned in translating legal text through the translation of the first chapter of G.P.Tumwine-Mukubwa's Essays in African Banking Law and Practice as well as to find solutions to these questions.In this process,Functionalist Skopos Theory is applied.Essays in African Banking Law and Practice is an important academic work about African banking law and practice.In this book,the author introduced the development of Banking Act and the banking system of Uganda,and analyzed some major issues about the banking system of Uganda.Chapter One of the book is titled Institutional Framework of Conducting Banking Business in Uganda,introducing the development of the bank of Uganda,the environment of commercial banking development,licensing and the revocation of the license.In this thesis,the author follows the guidance of skopos theory and aims to deliver clearly the information of the source text to the target language readers.This report consists of task description,process preparation,case studies and conclusion.The first part introduces the source and significance of the project and text analysis;the second part involves the task preparation,translation process and proofreading.Task preparation includes the preparation of parallel texts,glossary and translation theory;the third part plays the most important role in the whole report,discussing how to deal with the problems that appear in the process of translation.In this process,under the guidance of Functionalist Skopos Theory,the author adopted the strategies of recasting,amplification and division to analyze those problems at lexical level,syntactic level and textual level;the last part is a conclusion of the report,and it summarizes the achievement gained by the author from this project and points out the limitations of the translation practice.
