Based on the translation of Chapters One and Four of Biofuels Engineering Process Technology, this translation report mainly focuses on the application and reproduction of semantic functions of punctuation marks in the translation. In this report, semantic functions of several representative and commonly-used punctuation marks are discussed, including colon, semicolon, dash and parentheses; then, typical examples are selected from the translation to embody the application of Chinese punctuation marks and reproduction of the semantic functions of English punctuation marks in the translation. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the appropriate methods for dealing with punctuation marks have a great effect on the quality of translation, and properly using punctuation marks or not is one of criteria to measure a translator's translation capability as well as his sense of responsibility. This report consists of seven chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the background of the study. The second analyzes language features of the original text and the requirements of the translation task. The third describes the whole translation process, including pre-task work, while-task work and post-task work. The fourth mainly introduces the semantic functions of colon, semicolon, dash and parentheses. The fifth analyzes the application of Chinese colon, semicolon, dash and parentheses in the translation. The sixth gives specific examples of the reproduction of semantic functions of English punctuation marks in the translation, which are used to analyze the two main methods for the treatment of punctuation marks, i.e., transforming the punctuation marks in the source text into other punctuation marks and converting them into words. And the last summarizes the lessons drawn from the translation practice and the existing deficiencies to be solved.
