The source text of this translation report is from Customer Analysis for Dummies Chapter 14. It is a typical informative text,. This translation report will analyze problems by employing Peter Newmark’s theories of semantic translation and communicative translation. The author hopes this can be of certain reference value for the translation of informative texts. Problems encountered in the translation are mainly the correct choice of word meanings, analysis of long sentences and grasp of the whole discourse. The author makes use of the basic translation skills, including amplification and reduction,transformation of words and adjustment of the sentence structures. Finally, the author concludes that the methods may vary, but the principle is the same; the basic method would be the most essential ones.This report covers four chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction of the translation program, including the source, the structure and the meaning of it as well as the introduction of the original author, the main content and text analysis. Chapter 2 is the choice and the brief instruction of translation theory and method; mainly Peter Newmark’s text category translation, communicative translation and semantic theories.Chapter 3 is the analysis of translation cases, the application of theory and the solution of important and difficult issues including vocabulary, syntactical structure and style of discourse. Chapter 4 is the conclusion. After the translation of Customer Analytics for Dummies, there are still many shortages and problems to be solved.
