On Strategies Of C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Culturally Loaded Expressions

Most researches on culturally loaded expressions are in literary translation domain while the interpreting of culturally loaded expressions remains to be a challenge in interpreting.Compared with literary translation,interpreting demonstrates distinctive features.Different settings and working mode can also exert an impact on interpreters' choice of interpreting strategies.Therefore,this thesis attempts to describe the consecutive interpreting strategies of Chinese culturally loaded expressions in political settings.Based on functional equivalence,the thesis attempts to identify Chinese culturally loaded expressions in 1998-2016 premier's press conferences and give new connotations to the classification of Chinese culturally loaded expressions and their interpreting strategies in the political settings.The thesis adopts the methodology of descriptive translation studies.With description of culturally loaded expressions in renderings and with analysis based on functional equivalence,this thesis explores on interpreters' choice of interpreting strategies and the reasons behind in interpreting culturally loaded expressions.In the case study,the author adopts qualitative analysis to explore on the interpreting strategies and interpreting effect by delving into the achievement of designative meaning and associative meaning in renderings.Through quantitative analysis,the author discovered that the most widely used interpreting strategies in the case is literal interpreting and the least used is transliteration.The author also looks into the reasons of interpreters' choices from three perspectives:the nature of consecutive interpreting,the role of interpreter in political setting and the differences between Chinese and English language and culture.The thesis shows that interpreting in political settings demands high level of accuracy and fidelity.Interpreters usually adopt literal interpreting.However,the interpreting still demonstrates a certain level of flexibility.This thesis aims to provide suggestions for interpreting of culturally loaded expressions and deeper understanding of interpreting in political settings.
