A Report On Liaison Interpreting For Advertisement Shooting

Liaison interpreting is in essence a communicative activity,and the main task of the interpreter is to assist the parties speaking different languages in understanding the true intent of each other,in other words,achieving effective communication between the parties to the conversation.Grice points out that,in order to achieve effective communication,people will obey the four maxims under the Cooperative Principle,namely the maxims of Quantity,Quality,Relation and Manner.The report is based on the task that the author undertook as a liaison interpreter for a commercial advertisement shooting for a cosmetics company.It describes the background of the interpreting task,pre-task preparation,the process of interpreting,and post-task evaluation.The recording of the interpreting was transcribed and analyzed from the perspective of Cooperative Principle to see how the CP-based interpreting strategies adopted by the liaison interpreter contribute to effective communication.Through the analysis,the author comes to realize that obeying the Cooperative Principle and adopting corresponding interpreting strategies surely will contribute to effective communication.Yet undeniably,to what degree these strategies guaranteeing effective communication really lies in the subjective judgement of the interpreter who may sometimes make decisions counteract the effect of communication.The author humbly hopes that this report might be found useful for interpreters assuming tasks of similar nature.
