A Report On Liaison Interpreting Of The Third Mount Emei International Tea Culture Exhibition Based On The Adequacy Principle

This is a practice report on liaison interpreting.From July 2nd to 9th in 2018,the present author served as a volunteer in the Third China's Tea Town-Mount Emei International Tea Culture Exhibition and was assigned to be a liaison interpreter of an American purchaser Gilbert Frank Kendzior who is the owner and manager of All Points Tea Consulting LLC.This report mainly focuses on the liaison interpreting service provided for Mr.Kendzior.Under the adequacy principle of the German Functionalist Translation Theory,this report analyzes the whole interpreting process by means of case study and qualitative analysis,mainly discussing four categories of problems which are unexpected situations,efficient communication,sensitive topics and mental preparations.In order to apply the adequacy principle,interpreters should figure out specific initiators and translation briefs of specific interpreting tasks.The objective of this report is to find out better ways to deal with the aforesaid problems under the adequacy principle and then figure out significant lessons which the present author can apply to similar interpreting tasks to improve interpreting quality.After careful analysis of the whole interpreting process,the present author comes to the following conclusions:First,the adequacy principle can help reduce the influence of unexpected situations on interpreters.It can help interpreters to be more concentrated on finding solutions within their current ability.Second,the adequacy principle can help increase the efficiency of communication.It can prevent interpreters from focusing on literal meanings of certain words or sentences and from trying to convey unnecessary messages.Third,the adequacy principle can help increase interpreters' awareness of sensitive topics.It can help interpreters infer whether a topic is sensitive or not and then cope with it properly.Last,the adequacy principle can also help contribute to interpreters' mental preparations.It is a standard of assessing interpreting quality.When interpreters know what the final standards they need to meet are,they will have more flexibility to cope with mistakes and then reduce mental stress.All in all,the present author thinks that the adequacy principle gives the scope of interpreting skills interpreters can use to make an interpreting task successful.It can help interpreters better focus on finding effective solutions within current capabilities in the face of problems rather than let themselves be distracted,helping to increase interpreting quality.
