Based on the translating of two chapters of Encyclopedia of Applied Psychology, the paper attempts to probe into English academic text translation from the perspective of register analysis.Under the guidance of Register theory, some concrete issues in the translation process are discussed, referring to lexical and syntactic problems, involving the translating of technical terms and ordinary words in context, and the translating of long and complex sentences.According to the theory of Register,Halliday suggests that the translator should consider all three variables of register(field, tenor and mode)to make a comprehensive analysis of the source text in order to reproduce the register of the source text in the target text, and properly show the corresponding field, tenor and mode.Since Encyclopedia of Applied Psychology is a typically informative text, after studying the features of such kind of text, the author adopts some translation strategies accordingly.Through research and analysis, the author draws the conclusion that the Register theory is very useful in analyzing English academic text and can be applied in the translating of English academic text.
