A Report On Guide Interpreting At Monterey Bay Aquarium

With the increasing trend of globalization,overseas travelling has become more frequent.Different languages and cultures in different countries,however,have brought difficulties to tourists.With the assistance of interpreters to overcome these barriers,tourists' travelling can be more smooth and the cultural exchanges can also become easier.Therefore,guide interpreting has come into our sight.This is a guide interpreting report that is based on the author's interpreting task.By analyzing the progress of interpreting,this report aims at discussing what kind of translation strategies can be applied by guide interpreters to facilitate cultural communication under the guidelines of skopos theory.This report mainly introduces the specific requirements and tasks of the author's interpreting practice at Monterey Bay Aquarium.After receiving the task,the author made comprehensive pre-task preparations,including collecting background information in Chinese and English,building glossary and making a field trip.At the same time,the report also makes cases analysis based on the difficulties and problems encountered in the interpreting task.The author discussed the main situations and reasons when applying omission,paraphrase and amplification,these three major interpreting strategies in this interpreting task.Finally,the author concludes this interpreting task by making self-evaluation and providing some inspirations for interpreters who might tackle similar challenges.By analyzing this interpreting task,the author hopes to gain a better understanding of guide interpreter's role in interpreting task,and to apply translation theories into interpreting practices.
