A Report On Guide Interpreting At Huangguoshu Waterfalls Scenic Area Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Along with the reform and opening-up and the economic globalization,China is witnessing rapid growth in its tourism industry.It is of great importance to promote Chinese culture through the development of tourism industry.In the process,guide interpreters are playing a crucial role in facilitating foreign tourists' understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture with a splendid history of five thousand years.The work of guide interpreters is not only confined to interpreting.Guide interpreters should conduct the interpreting as an intercultural communication.Therefore,Guide interpreters have to apply different interpreting strategies under different circumstances with a view of promoting foreign tourists' understanding of the introduction made by the guide since most foreign tourists are not familiar with Chinese language and culture.What's more,the interpreting activity should be carried out in an efficient manner in consideration of limited time during the trip.This report,based on the author's practice as an interpreter for a Chinese tour guide and some foreign visitors at Huangguoshu Waterfalls Scenic Area,describes the whole interpreting task,including the pre-task preparation,performance in interpreting process and post-task analysis.With the transcription of the interpreting task as the object of study,this report intents to analyze the problems encountered in the interpreting task and attempts to figure out corresponding solutions.This report also analyzes the interpreting strategies adopted by the author under the guidance of Skopos Theory,such as amplification,paraphrasing and omission.A self-evaluation is included and some personal suggestions for guide interpreters provided in this report.It is hoped that this report could be of some help for guide interpreters to further hone their interpreting skills.
