In 2015,the author participated in an activity during her internship in Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office. This report is based on that activity,in which the author served as the interpreter during the Indonesia delegation's visit to the Guangzhou Industrial Famous and Excellent Products Exhibition and Sales Center.Representatives of this Center firstly showed these delegation members around, followed by a meeting of exchange between them.Director Luoyun was the keynote speaker of this meeting and she gave a detailed introduction of this center from multiple perspectives.Based on Director Luo's speech and the theory of Gile's Effort Model, the author analyzed problems in this task and proposed corresponding solutions.Consecutive interpreting is challenging in terms of the memory storage capability, psychological quality, cognitive knowledge.Interpreters need to motivate all the linguistic and extra-linguistic knowledge in their brain as speakers utter sentences.Interpreters also need to analyze the logical relations of these sentences, form corresponding conceptions, store them into their own short-term memory and then turn them into code. The processed information should also be recorded in the note. Then,in the production phase,it should be interpreted into target language.Interpreters have to deal with more than one task simultaneously, but their brain capacity and information-processing capacity are both limited. If one task occupies too much attention, the attention for other tasks will be eliminated and it will also lead to the deterioration of the interpretation.Interpretation is an exchange activity which crosses culture and language.Hence, for interpreters, mastering differences between two languages and applying correct interpreting strategies are meaningful.Director Luo,the keynote speaker of this meeting, gave a relatively formal speech,in which there were many proper nouns, sentences with high density and with complex syntactic structures. Therefore, the author spent so much time analyzing the logical relations of these components that she had no enough time for note-taking.Because proper nouns occurred frequently, the author had to pay more attention to note-taking.What's more, most of these proper nouns were unfamiliar, thus, the author became stressed and hurried to write down them as many as possible. When the author went back to read her note, she found them too illegible to be recognized.Consequently, the interpretation was deteriorated.Instructed by Gile's Effort Model, the author finds that all the problems originate from the imbalanced attribution of energy. The increase of short –term memory will result in problems like missing of information, delay of note-taking.Finally in phase two, long pauses, hesitation of expression, omission and so on occurred frequently. After exploring the essence of Gile's Effort Model, the author adopts strategies like linear interpretation, omission, generalization and paraphrasing, which alleviate the pressure of imbalanced attention-distribution.This report probes into how to avoid the attention imbalance problems and it might be helpful to other interpreters.
