It is not uncommon for studies about pauses and disfluency, but most of them focus on simultaneous interpretation. In the 1990 s,countries abroad had already initiated pauses and disfluency analyses, but domestic research started only at the beginning of this century. However, most of the academic research reviewed only the pauses phenomenon and explored the factors influencing it,but did not present practical solutions from the professional or pedagogical perspective. The Effort Model was introduced at the beginning of the 21 st century in China, which since has seen a rise in domestic research on pauses within that framework. However, the focus is still on listening,note-taking or numbers, and only a few discuss pauses and the effort model context in economy and trade interpretation practice. This paper is a practice report studying improper pauses in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. The author served as an interpreter in 2017 Global Business Incubation Summit. In this interpretation task, many improper pauses occur because of the heavy pressure and the complex text. With analysis to this project process and concrete cases, this practice report discusses the improper pauses from source language input, information processing and target language output.Effort model aims to explain the difficulties in interpreting process, and the factors that influence interpretation quality.Besides,Gile points out that the total attention of an interpreter is limited,so interpreter needs to allocate his attention reasonably during the interpretation process,or different problems would occur and lower interpretation quality. The author just didn't allocate her attention in this task, and put too much attention on note-taking,so there's no enough attention could be allocated to listening and target language output. At last, improper pauses appear.By means of case analysis, the author would analyze the concrete reasons of improper pauses and come up practical solutions with Gile's effort model. This practice report demonstrates that excessive dependence on note-taking would lead to unbalance of interpreter's attention, and give rise to improper pauses in target language output. Therefore, interpreter could write down effective and clear information after getting the general idea of the original text, and ensure enough attention could be distributed to target language output. The author hopes that this practice report could provide available experience for later same kind of interpretation task.
