Disfluency In Interpreting:a Report On Business Interpreting Practice

Accuracy and fluency are considered as the most important standards in evaluating the quality of interpreting.In the author's own business interpreting practice,he found out that fluency is a crucial factor that affects audiences' feeling.But in fact,most interpreting researches focused on accuracy and only a few on fluency and even fewer on field business interpreting.This thesis mainly focuses on the analyses of the on-site interpreting practice from Chinese to English at a bilateral negotiation table in 2015 and on reflections after the interpreting.The author wants to find out the causes of disfluency in interpreting,figure out each factor's general proportion among all the factors and come up with solutions and effective ways to train a trainee.By case study and descriptive research,the author will comprehensively analyze the disfluency in his own interpreting practice.Besides,the author will transcribe three presentation audios of the earnings conferences from Terena,a training company,and then analyze and compare the causes and types of disfluency in the author's and others' interpreting tasks.The thesis is based on field interpreting practice.The author figured out the proportion of each type of disfluency.Besides,the author analyzed and marked the audios again and then came up with the causes of each type of disfluency.Furthermore,the author came up with solutions to each cause mentioned above and gave suggestions to trainers and trainees.Most importantly,the author took the opportunity of writing this thesis to reflect on his own interpreting.Finally,the author suggests that more studies should be conducted in field interpreting.Secondly,researchers can conduct more comprehensive researches and take into account all other potential factors.Furthermore,researchers can conduct researches from psychological aspects to find deeper roots of disfluency in interpreting.
