It has long been a conundrum to translate long English sentences.Although a number of scholars have dedicated to studying on the translation of long English sentences, this issue still keeps badgering us at present.Long English sentences boasts complex structures and various forms. It also has many English-Chinese translation methods.Based on English texts of the Wall Street Journal, this thesis focuses on the difficulties in differentiating clauses relationships of original sentences and adjusting sequences of translated clauses of English long sentences that includes “which” clauses. The major objective of this thesis is to provide proper and comparatively accurate translation techniques for “which” clauses under the perspective of Generalized Topic Structure(GTS)theory.Firstly, the author parses long English sentences that include “which” clauses into N-T Clauses by using the software Notepad++.After parsing,a systematical tagging approach and a set of translation techniques for English “which” clauses has been set up under the guidance of the GTS theory. In English,“which” clauses can be used to modify subjects, objects and clauses, etc. On account of this, four tagging marks, which are “WS”,“WO”,“WPO” and “WC”,have been summarized. These four marks represent for four different types of “which” clauses: “WS” refers to the “which” clauses that used to modify subjects;“WO” refers to the “which” clauses described objects;“WPO” refers to the “which” clauses that follow prepositions;and “WC” refers to the “which” clauses used to modify the whole previous clauses. For the part of translating, this thesis has summarized translation techniques for each kind of “which” clauses in comply with the law of parsing and clauses-assembling,which are techniques of omission, splitting, reference and preposition. All these results prove that GTS theory can not only be applied on English, but also guide the parsing and translating of long English sentences, improving the quality of English-Chinese translation of long English sentences that include “which” clauses.
