This report is based on the translation of I Loved Grampy,a novel written by a American writer called Bill Melchior. The novel tells a story about the childhood of the author under the influence of his grampy. It is mainly about the childhood experiences of the author: the days when his father, his grampy and himself went to watch baseball games together;grampy's religion beliefs and the lessons grampy taught the author;the fishing trip, grampy's sick and the funeral. The novel does not have rhetorical words or phrases, but the emotion of the novel is sincere and many images of the childhood can cause the resonance of the readers. One of the distinct features of the novel is the American culture which can be found throughout the text.Culture includes language so translators have to know the cultures of two languages in order to do the translation. Therefore, translators have to acquire some knowledge about culture before translation. The knowledge can help translators to turn some particular things or things with different meanings in other cultures into concepts the target text readers can accept and comprehend. For translators,it becomes quite important to understand the other culture properly. The translator classified the culturally loaded words into two classifications and then analyzed the translation of these two categories of culturally loaded words in the novel. The specific translation methods include literal translation, transliteration and free translation. After the discussion, the report aims to stress the importance of culture and cultural knowledge in translation.A translator should not only be bilingual, but also be able to know the source language culture and target language culture. When translators need to translate a literature work on culture, they should have cultural awareness during the whole translation process. When the translation seems unnatural, translators should take culture into consideration and readjust the translation.
