Identifying written translation in criminal proceedings as a separate right: scope and supervision under European law, as the source text for the translation report, is a researching paper by James Brannan, who is a senior translator at European Court of Human Rights at Strasbourg. In the three parts of the paper, the author describes the existing case-laws on written translation in criminal proceedings, the recent development in EU legislation and a look into the future. The source text is typical academic, and according to Peter Newmark's text type theory, this text is informative and vocative, while putting an emphasis on the informative aspect. Exactness and conciseness is the feature of the text and there are a lot of long and complex sentences, which is specifically shown in the text. The core function of the text is accurate transmission of information and readership, thus the main translation methods would be semantic translation. The reporter needs to ensure the readability of the target text while maintain the information expressed accurately. Through these steps, the reporter tries to make the target readers receive the same meanings. The source is plain English, while there is a lot of legalese in long and complex sentences, and then semantic translation will be the main method, which is faithful to the source text while maintaining the accuracy of names of places, organizations. Also fine-tuning will be applied to ensure the smoothness in the target text. The main difficulty in translation would be the terms and long and complex sentences. In order to achieve the above goals mentioned, the translator discussed the translation of source text both on the lexical and syntactic level.
