The Belt and Road Initiative was proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2013.It aims at promoting the economic development and cultural exchanges between China and the countries along the route. For every country, the initiative is not only an opportunity, but also a challenge. Therefore,it has aroused wide public concern.Accordingly,in the process of implementing the initiative, the English translation of texts on the initiative plays a very important role.In view of this, the present translator undertakes the task of translating from Chinese into English the sixth chapter of A Comprehensive Analysis of the Belt and Road Initiative by Xin Yuyan and Li Ke.This text mainly introduces the influence of the Belt and Road Initiative on the world. There is no published English version of this text,so the present translation is original and necessary.Despite its difficulty, the translator finishes the job through a systemic procedure of four stages and the complementary use of various translation methods and techniques in the treatment of difficult words, sentences and textual fragments. In terms of the systemic procedure of translation, the translator goes through three stages: pre-translation,translation,and post-translation work.In the stage of pre-translation work, the translator chooses the source text and makes full preparations for the translation practice by selecting certain bilingual dictionaries and web tools, collecting necessary background information of the Belt and Road Initiative and building up a glossary of proper nouns and special terms. In the stage of translation, which consists of source text analysis and target text production, the translator first reads the source text carefully and figures out its meaning and style, and then translates it on the lexical, sentential and textual level to ensure that the target text is accurate in meaning and appropriate and style. In the stage of post-translation work, the translator first checks whether the source text has been correctly understood, and then conducts a full proofreading and revision of the target text to make sure it is formally correct and functionally adequate. In terms of the complementary use of translation methods, the translator uses various translation methods and techniques flexibly to solve translation problems on the lexical, sentential and textual levels. On the lexical level, the translator mainly employs the methods of literal and free translation and the techniques of transliteration, morphemic translation and others in the translation of proper nouns, special terms, numbers and metaphorical words to guarantee the accuracy of the target words in meaning and form.On the sentential level, the translator largely applies the method of free translation and the techniques of division, addition(of subject, etc.)and transposition in the translation of complicated,zero-subject,and poetry-quoting sentences to ensure the semantic and syntactic accuracy of the target sentences. On the textual level, the translator mainly employs the method of free translation and the techniques of addition of logical, grammatical and lexical cohesive devices in the translation of longer text fragments to make sure the target text fragments are cohesive as well as coherent. This experience of translation practice has its practical significance. In terms of its cultural function, this translation task may help to publicize the role of the Belt and Road Initiative among English-speaking readers in the world. In terms of its translational function, this translation experience may help to improve the methods and techniques of the translation of political texts. At least, this translation practice has helped to enhance the translator?s own translation proficiency.
