E-C Translation Report On Starting With Hume:on Handling Long Sentences In Philosophical Texts

This project is a real E-C translation project.The translation version is to be published by Heilongjiang Education Press.The source text,Starting with Hume,is a philosophical introductory book written by Charlotte Randall Brown and William Edward Morris.Starting with Hume introduces and explores Hume's entire life and his philosophical project.There are more than seventy thousand English words in the source text and the target text contains about 100,000 words.Chinese readers that are interested in Philosophy are the target readers of this book.In the translation process,Handling long sentences is a big problem.Taking Functional Equivalence Theory as its theoretical framework,this report adopts corresponding translation methods according to analyzing different types of long sentences.According to Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,Translation is a process that uses the most proper,natural and equivalent words to reproduce the meaning of the source text.Translation is not only the equivalence of lexical meaning but also the equivalence of semantic meaning,text style and literary form.By analyzing the types of long sentences,the translator adopts Literal translation,Division and Recombination under the framework of Functional Equivalence Theory.This report indicates that these methods we have talked about above can be applied to the translation of long sentences in philosophical texts so that the target text can be optimized and the translation project can be accomplished successfully.
