Translation Practice Report On The Official English Websites Of Universities

In order to keep pace with the development of international higher education,China has called for the construction of first-rate universities and disciplines in these years.In this context,domestic universities have set up official English websites to enhance overseas publicity work,so as to satisfy the demand of international education operation.The history of most official English websites of domestic universities is relatively short.Currently,a number of universities still have no English official websites and related translation research is at an early stage.The translation report is based on the author's practice of translating Chinese material for the official English website of Tianjin University.The aim of the report is to propose effective approaches that are of good application and offer reference for similar translation practice.Skopos theory provides significant guidance in the practice.It is applicable and practical to the translation of the materials for the official English website.In terms of the occasion on which the translations are adopted,the official English website of Tianjin University is a medium of publicity.It determines that the target texts are of clear communicative purposes.Taking Skopos theory as theoretical guidance is appropriate and requisite to realize the communicative goals.In terms of the characteristics of the original texts,the contents involve much expertise knowledge,and the sentences are relatively long and frequently employ verbs.Overall,the style of the original texts is typical of Chinese characteristics.Given this,mechanically translated target texts are not adaptable to the reading habits of English readers.As a result,the communicative purposes can't be fully achieved.According to the three rules which are skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule in Skopos theory and the relations among these rules,proper choices can be made to ensure that the target texts are of strong intratextual coherence and are more suitable for the translation purposes on the basis of adequate fidelity to the original texts.Titles of scientific research projects are windows for readers to perceive the researches and their achievements.Terms and logic are essential elements of a project title.In order to produce accurate translations of project titles,it is necessary to verify the translations of terms and analyze logical relations prudently.Generally,in Chinese introductions of research achievements,sentences are relatively long and verbs are frequently used.The readability andacceptability of target texts can be enhanced through methods of changing parts of speech and separating long sentences into independent short sentences.Coordination of a target text relies on the logic and harmony within paragraphs.To smooth the logical relations and make a paragraph in harmony,it is effective to adjust the order of sentences and enhance the cohesion and coherence between sentences.The report is to illustrate the guidance of Skopos theory in the practice on the basis of analysis of specific cases.The analysis is carried out in the third chapter from three aspects of the translation of scientific research project titles,the translation of sentences and the translation of paragraphs.The other three chapters are respectively task description,translation process,and summary.
