A Translation Report Of The Internet Of Us: Knowing More And Understanding Less In The Age Of Big Data (Chapters 1-3)

Thanks to the evolution of the information technology in the age of big data,the Internet has significantly facilitated people's life and extended its influence in almost every aspect of our society.But some people believe that the Internet is just a tool that has been invented to serve humans.However,the Internet is far more than a simple piece of human creation.Ever since its emergence,the Internet has unceasingly evolved and served us.Besides,the Internet has also brought about a lot of changes to our society,especially the way people get information and understand knowledge.This thesis is a translation report of The Internet of Us:Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data(Chapters 1-3).Chapter One in this book mainly tells how a digital form of life works and imagines a technology called Neuromedia that could be implanted into our brain and enables us to obtain new information even without memorization.Chapter Two starts with four questions about acquiring new information.Processing from these four questions the writer of source text points out that nowadays the Internet has changed our way of acquiring new information and argues that the Internet is just a deliverance of knowledge rather than providing answers for every question.Chapter Three is developed with the idea that the Internet has made our society much more abstract and depersonalized than it could ever be.Besides,a question that whether the Internet has made us less reasonable is canvassed from the moral and the political respective.The author of this translation report adopts Functional Equivalence Theory,put forward by Eugene A.Nida,as his theoretical guidance to carry out translation and analysis of source text for the purpose of representing source text with target language on the basis of complete understanding of source text.By doing so,the readers are able to have more specific and clearer understanding of the source text.What's more,the target reader's equivalent response to the source text and target text can also be expected.Apart from that,this translation report can also be presented as a useful reference of using Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation of scientific text.In addition,during the process of writing this translation report,the author of this translation report,guided by the lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence in Functional Equivalence Theory,uses both literal translation and free translation methods.And translation techniques such as direct translation and reverse translation,omission and amplification are also utilized to strive to completely represent information in source text and stylistics features.This translation report mainly consists of four chapters.Chapter One is an introduction,which focuses on the background,theoretic guidance and significance of this translation report.Chapter Two is an introduction of source text,which focuses on the content and the linguistic features of source text.Chapter Three is a case study,which covers the application of Functional Equivalence Theory,key points and difficulties in translation,including passive voices,nominalization structure,scientific terminologies,impersonal-subject sentences,and long and complicated sentences.Apart from that,under the guidance of Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,appropriate translation methods,including lexical conversion,direct translation and inverse translation,omission,the change of voices,and so on,are employed to deal with the translation difficulties.Chapter Four is a conclusion and reflective thinking about this translation process,and some unresolved problems are also summarized.
