A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The English Texts Of Test Tube Baby

There have been more and more infertility patients due to the impacts of the environmental pollution,ageing,job and life stresses in recent years.There have been more and more patients tending to undergo the In Vitro Fertilization(IVF)treatment.The IVF technology in western countries has been more developed than that in China.Hence it is increasingly important to translate the English materials of IVF technology into Chinese.This thesis is a report on the Chinese translation of the IVF-ET English texts.The source texts are selected from the English articles published on the Naperville Fertility Center website in the United States.They are mainly related to the IVF development history,drugs and surgical procedures.This translation aims at providing information to the infertility patients,their family and those who are interested in IVF.The main translation problems include the lack of standardization of translation of the proper nouns,the translation errors of professional and common words/phrases caused by the translator's lack of consideration of the context in the first-draft translation and the unnatural formal equivalence of the Chinese sentences with the original linguistic structures and forms so that the target readers feel difficult in reading and understanding the translation.To solve these problems,this thesis analyzes the specific translation strategies.In the proper nouns translation,first of all,the conventional corresponding Chinese proper nouns is be used.Besides,the related background knowledge is also important in the translation of the proper nouns.In the professional and common words/phrases translation,the contextual factors like culture,mood and emotion are taken into consideration so that the Chinese meaning of each word/phrase can be determined.The Chinese translation is oriented towards the target readers' reading habits.The subject,predicate and word order in a sentence and the cohesion between sentences are restructured according to the Chinese conventionality so that the translation can be well accepted.Due to the professional characteristics of the IVF articles and the target readers' reading habits and cognitive abilities,the translation should be precise,concise and clear in expression.
