The Paris School of Interpretive Theory of Translation,represented by Seleskovitch and Lederer,believes that interpreting is first and foremost an act of communication.Therefore,the object of interpreting should be “sense” instead of the form and structure of language.The triangular model of interpreting consists of three steps,namely,comprehension,de-verbalization and reformation,among which de-verbalization is at the core.In consecutive interpreting,the reason interpreters can deliver in another language what they've heard after listening to several minutes of speech is exactly because they applied deverbalization in the process.In addition,to avoid confusing the audience with incomprehensible target language resulted from word-to-word transposition,interpreters should actively use the de-verbalization strategy.This paper used the author's consecutive interpreting performance of Jack Ma's speech in the 2016 Annual Conference of South China Morning Post as a case study.Both successful and unsuccessful de-verbalization examples were given and analyzed in detail.Strategies to enhance the ability of de-verbalization were also offered.
