The present thesis for the MTI degree takes Marie Ferrarella's Becoming a Cavanaugh(chapter 1,13,14 and 15)as a case study to explore how to reproduce the narrative style of the original work in light of Nida's theory of equivalence and how to select proper translation strategies. The biggest challenge in the translating process lies in the reproduction of Ferrarella's style in narratives, which features a mixture of bittersweet love and creepy suspense. To deal with this,Nida's Equivalence Theory is adopted. The present thesis first analyzes the feasibility of Nida's Equivalence Theory as a guide for style reproduction in literary works.Secondly, based on the existing researches and the characteristics of Becoming a Cavanuagh, the present thesis explores the style reproduction in light of three elements of a novel,i.e.the characters, scenes and plots,so as to solve the main difficulty in this translation practice.Based on this study, style reproduction in literary works includes both reproduction of the spiritual essence and that of elements that make the works special. With an emphasis and pursuit of style reproduction on the basis of meaning equivalence,it is more likely that target-text readers would enjoy reading in the same or similar way as the source-text readers do.As an effort to realize this purpose,it is recommended that division and amplification be adopted to reproduce the implicit language, powerful action, and complex psychology of characters, methods such as compensation, replacement, and specialization be used to realize style equivalence in scene description, and strategies including literal translation and replacement be used to reproduce the linear description of plots.
