Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation project focusing on a chosen part of the novel The Wolf Road written by Beth Lewis,a thriller writer from the UK.The excerpted source text is mainly about a partial ending of the whole story and the beginning of the whole story, including the encounter of the two leading characters, the tacit agreement between them and the building of their mutual trust. The translator hopes that, through this translation project,he can improve his translation skills and strategies and also learn the writing style of Beth Lewis. The language of this novel requires the translator to adopt various translation strategies and skills, because the novel includes large amount of images that are not used in the target language. The novel is also full of vivid descriptions,so the translator must know both languages well.Considering the style of the source text, the translator chooses the "Skopos Theory" as the theoretical framework for this translation project."Skopos Theory" is composed of skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Based on this theory, the translator uses various skills like contextual amplification and omission, conversion and adaptive translation, etc. The translator aims to produce a translation that both keeps loyalty to the original text and that is readable and understandable to the target readers. In the process of doing the translation practice and writing the report, the translator becomes more aware that the excellent command of translation skills and strategies, the mastery of both languages and knowing some translation theories are indispensable abilities for a qualified translator.Meanwhile, the translator also actively exchanges ideas with his classmates to improve his translation and he also knows that more efforts need to be made to pursue a higher-quality translation.
