This project is based on the translation of the second and third chapter of Communication Between Cultures,Communication and Culture: The Voice and the Echo and Culture Diversity in Perception: Alternative Views of Reality,a work on intercultural communication written by Larry A.Samovar and Richard E.Porter.The two chapters discuss the definition of perception, belief and values, throwing light upon the notion of cultural pattern,on which a case study on American cultural pattern is presented.Meanwhile, mainstream taxonomies on the analysis of the behavioral patterns are also been manifested.Under the guidance of text typology theory, this report explores application of translation strategies during the translation process.Difficulties in this translation lie in the fact that there are many long sentences, passive voices in the source text as well as numerous technical terms, which needs a lots of background knowledge of intercultural communication. The project, therefore,is a challenge to the translator’s grammatical knowledge and logical thinking. In light of features of the source text,Katharina Reiss’ s theory of text typology is employed as the theoretical framework during the whole translation of the project.Based on its requests in translating informative text, the project is strictly guided under the theory and meanwhile combined with various strategies for translation, such as division, amplification, and so on.It proves that Katharina Reiss’ s theory of text typology is of great significance and practicability in translation. The translator realized that appropriate theoretical guidance, good command of bilingual language, learning ability of relevant knowledge, together with the calmness and patience in the face o difficulties are all indispensable in translation. |
