In this paper, the author choosed part of History of the petroleum industry in Canada as source texts.Based on the analysis of language characteristics of EST,the author conducted some cases of translation at the lexical level and at the syntanic level, guided by functional equivalence theory. After analyzing the language characteristics of EST,the author summarized the main translation difficulties in the aspects of vocabulary and syntax, and then obtained the corresponding processing methods through the analysis of the examples. At the lexical level, the linguistic features as well as translation difficulties are the specialization of general vocabulary and the problems of part of speech. The features and translation difficulties at the syntactic level are the translation of passive voice and long sentences.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the author concluded that accurate terminology translation and proper conversion of part of speech are necessary at the lexical level, and at the syntactic level appropriate adjustments to the word order and the change of voice are needed,so as to achieve the “equivalence”of the meaning ultimately.
