In recent years, with the development of economic cooperation and exchanges between China and the global world, the importance of translating instructions of import and export instrument or equipment is more and more noticeable.Due to the increase of environmental pollution and the policy of sustainable development,China attaches great importance to environmental monitoring and environmental protection. Therefore, this research decides to use Spectrophotometer Operation Manual,an English instrument operation instruction book related to environmental monitoring,as the source language material. The source text is a scientific English text which has the characteristics of a wide use of passive sentences, imperative sentences,non-subject sentences, simple sentences, and nominalization. It belongs to informative text according to Newmark's text type theory;its main function is to convey information. Moreover, the key to communicative translation theory is to convey information,to make readers think, feel, and act,so as to deliver information and produce effects. What's more, extensive use of passive structure is one of the main characteristics of the source text. Therefore, according to the communicative translation theory, the author divides passive sentences into the marked passive sentences and the unmarked passive sentences;and then determines to use linear translation and reverse translation to analyze the translation of passive sentences in the source text according to the scientific English translation principles.Through this project, the author draws the followings conclusions.During the translation process, the author has adopted two strategies to deal with the passive voice.Firstly,we can translate English passive sentences into Chinese active ones in view of the syntactic differences between English and Chinese. The methods are linear translating, reverse translating,E-C translation of passive voice into non-subject sentences, and adding a subject and conversion.Secondly,we can translate them into Chinese passive ones in consideration of the translation's consistency with the original English version. The method is adding the word “?“ or other words with passive meaning to the translation. At last, the author hopes that this research can provide some guidance and reference for the translation of instrument operation manual, the translation of the same type of text, and even the translation of scientific and technical English text.
