Translation Strategies For Passive Sentences In Sci-tech Texts Guided By Communicative Translation Theory

With the development of society,various environmental problems become increasingly obvious.People begin to focus on the surrounding environment and quality of life.Climate Change and Air Pollution mainly states the different meteorological phenomena in various countries and each country's analysis and solution to these climate phenomena.The study of this text can provide some enlightenment and methods for China to deal with climate phenomena.Communicative translation theory proposed by Newmark is applicable to sci-tech texts,and Climate Change and Air Pollution is a sci-tech text in text of information function.Therefore,communicative translation theory can be adopted in text of information function.Information function text attaches importance to the effect of information transmission.So the text will convey information by the way of making the reader easy to understand and accept.Communicative translation theory focuses on the same effect of target readers as that of original readers.Communicative translation theory,as a translation theory that focuses on the experience of target readers,has been widely discussed on how it can be appropriately and effectively applied to the translation of sci-tech texts.Newmark pointed out that communicative translation is aimed at conveying information according to the language characteristics,culture and pragmatic methods of the target language.Based on Newmark's communicative translation theory,this translation practice report analyzes the translation of passive sentences in Chapter 5 to Chapter 7 of Climate Change and Air Pollution,and probes into the specific translation strategies for passive sentences in such meteorological science and technology texts.The translation report is divided into five chapters.The first three chapters of the report introduce original text,translation project,translation process,and concepts of Communicative Translation theory and passive sentences.The fourth chapter is the core chapter.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,different translation strategies for English passive sentences are selected in the translation process,including amplification,division,inversion,combination,and synthetization.These strategies are used to convert passive sentences in English to active sentences,passive sentences and unique syntactic sentences in Chinese.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole translation projects,including findings and limitations.
