Power transition is a concept widely used with a connotation of "power conflict" and "power struggle". China now stresses peaceful development and emphasize on avoiding the logic of "power transition". However, it should be noted that power transition does not necessarily lead to conflicts or war. In power transition theory, the concept of power transition, its process and its results are discussed systematically. What is also contained in these discussions is the condition for peaceful transition. This dissertation reviews peaceful development of China from the perspective of power transition theory and puts power transition and peaceful development in the same logic framework for understanding why China can keep its peaceful development.Power transition takes power parity as the necessary condition for hegemonic war. This dissertation assesses the power of China and the US and points out that China still lags behind the US not only in terms of traditional power dimension and soft power dimension and power parity has not been reached between the two countries. This is the subjective factor China's current peaceful development. In addition, power transition theory regards "powerful and satisfactory" rising power as an important condition for peaceful transition. Through analyzing China's participation in the international regime, this paper notes China tends to be a satisfactory state, which constitute the objective factor for China's peaceful development. The US however, is a non-status-quo state which pose potential threat for China's peaceful development.Based on these observations, this dissertation proposes that China make full use of the pre-power-parity phase to properly deal with Sino-American relations. Meanwhile, in its process of integrating into international system, China should hold a cooperative attitude and creatively involve the dominant state in its development. In addition, China needs to properly address the threats from the US and create favorable conditions for its own peaceful development.
