The Motivations For America To Act As A Pushing Hand In The Ukraine Crisis

The collapse of the former Soviet Union has brought two results. On the one hand, Ukraine gains independence, making the dream of establishing their own nation for several generations come true. On the other hand, Russia hurts badly, and becomes a second-rate country in the international community. Although Russia and Ukraine become two independent countries, their contact formed in hundreds of years can't come to an end. Both Ukraine and Russia are mutually needed. Today's Russia can't parallel with the former Soviet Union, but it has been working to pursue national rejuvenation and renaissance, which is considered by the United States the biggest challenge of its “one super-power” status in the world. The CIS is Russia's important support to restore its worldwide great power status. As the second largest country of the CIS, Ukraine's internal affairs and diplomacy changes both have a farreaching impact on the development of the CIS. The “special relationship” between the two countries together with Ukraine's important strategic position, determines that Ukraine plays a key role in the rejuvenation of Russia. Therefore, Ukraine becomes America's key object in order to beat Russia. This thesis has theoretical significance in explaining the difficulties of the revival of Russia, and the political unrest in Ukraine as well as the U.S.-led NATO's Eastern Expansion policy.This thesis intends to make an exploration into the motivations for America to act as a pushing hand in the Ukraine Crisis, and points out that the motivations lie in Ukraine's advantageous geographical elements, underlying political gains and potential economic benefits.
