“Intermediate zone” is the important content of striving for local hegemony and global hegemony by western powers in the modern time. The theory of “intermediate zone” plays an important role in the regional and global politics in different periods of modern and contemporary times.Mongolia is located between China and Russia, the two major countries. As a typical “intermediate zone”,the country is facing a complex and volatile geopolitical and security environment and it is the strategic point of intersection for several major powers in the world. At the beginning of s,the disintegration of the Soviet Union meant that Mongolia lost its dependence and its diplomacy was in an embarrassing position,so the factors that threatened and promoted its interests were also complicated and changeable. In order to adapt to the change of international pattern,Mongolia has entered into the period of reform and opening up,giving up the policy of “inclined to one side which it has adhered for a long time.On the contrary,it starts to implement the foreign policy with “multi pivot which is non-aligned,comprehensive and maintaining equal-distance to all countries. This paper discusses Mongolia's foreign policy changes after the cold war, through two main research methods, historical approach and case analytical method taking the “intermediate zone” theory as the guiding ideology.Research content mainly includes four parts: theory summary of intermediate zone,Mongolia's foreign policy from theoretical perspective of “intermediate zone” theory,Sino-Mongolian relations and Mongolia's great power diplomacy. To study Mongolia's foreign policy change from the theoretical perspective of “intermediate zone”,is a new research scheme, which can enrich the research contents of small states' diplomacy from academic circles.Mongolia is an important neighbor of China, with a very deep historical origin,to have important role in improving bilateral relations by studying Mongolia's foreign policy changes in the past.
