There were twice reforming in academic organizations of Chinese universities during last 50 years. There has been confusion and controversy on the issue of how to reorganization universities scientifically. in China's higher education academic circle. This study has a selection of ten universities in the England as a research object based on English universities has a long history and the excellent quality. This study probe into the present situation of academic organizations and the characteristics of the structural reforming of universities, which has practical value for reorganization universities scientifically in China.This study adopts the method of case and comparison and divided the universities into five categories(ancient universities, university of London, red brick university, Robbins report(1963) and plate glass university and polytechnic university) and selected 10 universities of them(Oxford and Cambridge, the university college London and king's college, university of Birmingham and Manchester university, the university of east Anglia and York university, university of central Lancashire and Birmingham city university).Then the study analyze and summarize the evolution characteristics in the process of development by two dimension of synchronic and diachronic.In the dimension of synchronic, this study found significant differences in three aspects in various stages of the universities which is number, structure and discipline by investigating the official websites of 10 universities. The old universities show the characteristics of large number, complex structure and elite education in academic organizations. The new universities show the characteristics of small number, simple structure and vocational education in academic organizations. In the dimension of diachronic, the academic organizations reforming of English universities presents the obvious stage difference. The classical universities has the structure of college ?faculty and department, university of London has the structure of joining college, the new universities after the second world war has the structure of modified college ?faculty and department, and the polytechnic university has the structure of faculty and department. The new universities inherited the traditional academic structure of the classical university to a certain extent, and reformed it at the same time, which until the new universities adopted a new academic structure of faculty and department.This study found that the needs of the organization to stabilize the structure and function, and the needs of the organization to exchange resources with environment leads to reforming in academic organizations of English universities. English universities have historical differences in academic organizations when them established in different period. There is also convergence in portions of their academic organizations. Overall, the development of academic organizations of English universities present a complex picture of homogeneous alienation.
