From the beginning of the autumn of 2001, English course is gradually set up in elementary schools, which is the important content of curriculum reform of basic education in China. This phase of the curriculum objective is to cultivate positive attitude and help them establish confidence in learning English, so as to lay a good foundation for the future English learning. Therefore, with the warming up of learning foreign languages, how to mobilize the learning enthusiasm of students has become the focus of many teachers and parents concerned. Thus, the aim of this study is to explore the reasons of English learning enthusiasm deficiency in elementary schools, and discuss how to inspire their English learning enthusiasm according to the characteristics of physical and mental development of the pupils. By providing some effective countermeasures, the present research aims to improve the students learning interest, lead them have positive affect in English study and cultivate the pupils' English comprehensive application ability.This study, by means of consulting the latest masters' thesis concerning the learning enthusiasm in the last five years, reviews the definition of the learning enthusiasm and factors which influence students' learning enthusiasm. Based on the reviews of the previous researches, the concept of the learning enthusiasm is to be explored and discussed. In order to change the situation of the students' English learning and enhance their enthusiasm in learning English, the theoretical basis for this study is set,which includes Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, Achievement motivation theory, Self-Efficacy theory, Pygmalion Effect and other theories of pedagogy and educational psychology about the learning enthusiasm.Then, the paper makes a survey on English learning enthusiasm of the pupils in multi-dimensions through the methods of questionnaire survey and interviews. The questionnaire has a total of 20 questions, which intend to investigate the factors that influence students' English learning enthusiasm among the 240 students. Some parents are chosen as the subjects of the interviews. The related data are collected and analyzed by excel. It also analyzes the four factors of influencing the pupils' enthusiasm of learning English. The study holds that: the internal factors include motivation factors and learning interest factors, the external ones include teacher factors and family factors. The corresponding strategies are put forward based on these factors. It is hoped that this study can arouse the students' English learning zeal, cultivate their independent learning ability and benefit their life-long development.This thesis is composed of six parts: the first part gives an introduction to this study, including the background, the purpose, the significance and the research methodology of this study. The second part is literature review of learning enthusiasm both at home and abroad. The third part provides the theoretical basis of this study. The fourth part mainly focuses on the design of the research. In the fifth part, based on these factors, the paper has given some corresponding countermeasures. The sixth part provides a conclusion of the thesis. The findings and limitations of this study are given in this part. Suggestions for further studies are also pointed out.
