With the coming of knowledge economy era, practical abilities as well as the spirit of exploration and innovation have serious implications for the sustainable development of the nation. Thus, the new curriculum reform points out that it is essential to change the traditional learning methods by rote and to advocate cooperative inquiry and independent study so as to improve the students' practical capacities and scientific literacy. It is also important to encourage the initiative and positivity of the students in learning and to propel inquiry-based teaching so as to improve their creativity. Although the inquiry-based teaching emphasizes the change of the learning styles of students, the change of the teachers' roles cannot be ignored in fact.The inquiry-based teaching attaches importance to student-centered methods. However, since the autonomous inquiry abilities of the students are still weak, the guidance of the teachers is extremely necessary. According to the practice, the effective guidance by the teacher are required not only in the selection of content and the creation of inquiry conditions, but also in the activities in each stage in the process of inquiry-based learning. Therefore, inquiry-based teaching should not neglect but should moderately emphasize the role of the teachers if necessary while attaching importance to the principal role of the students.This thesis includes five parts as follows:Part 1 analyzes the definition and characteristics of inquiry-based teaching as well as some problems that should be focused on in practice.Part 2 discusses the definitions of role and teacher's role and reviewed the development of teacher's role in inquiry-based teaching.Part 3 analyzes the teacher's roles as promoter, inquirer, organizer, lifelong learner, researcher and so on in the inquiry-based teaching of physics.Part 4 makes an analysis of the main problems in the teacher's role-playing in the inquiry-based teaching of physics.Part 5 provides several suggestions so as to offer some references to relevant educators.
