As a key link in classroom teaching, homework is an essential instrument for students to master, consolidate and deepen new knowledge by helping them absorb and digest what has been learnt in class. Similarly, efficient English homework design in primary schools, an important component of English teaching in elementary schools, is helpful in improving English teaching quality. However, while experts at home and abroad acknowledge the positive role homework plays, overload of schoolwork is a serious problem that haunts the educational circle in China, thus hindering the research on homework design.Based on instructional theories like humanism, constructivism and theory in multiple intelligence, the author made a survey and analysis about the current situations of English homework in primary schools via questionnaires and interviews for more than one year. Several problems emerge during the research. First, the content of English homework is confined to the textbook, ignoring the students' real life. Second, the design of English homework neglects students' individuality. Third, English homework design is examination oriented. Fourth, English homework is monotonous with the forms of copying, writhing, and reciting as the mainstream.Fortunately, most teachers have realized the urgent need for reform. By assigning more innovative homework, students can have fun in English learning as well as consolidating knowledge, developing abilities and improving skills.With the help of an experiment, this paper aims to investigate whether diverse designs in English homework can change students' negative perception of homework, and improve student's achievements. The author chooses her 105 students in Grade Six as the subjects, with Class Six set as the experimental class and Class Five as the controlled class. At the beginning of the experiment, questionnaires, interviews, and pre-tests are conducted among the subjects on the present situations of homework. After the experiment, the author carries out another round of questionnaire and post-test and compares the results of pre-test and post-tests to testify her hypothesis.The results show that students will develop a positive perception of English homework and have great improvements after they are assigned to do homework that is designed in the type of creative homework, practical homework, interesting homework, close-to-life homework with consideration of students' different personalities and characteristics.English teachers in primary schools can consult various suggestive types of English homework in this paper which is also a practical guidance, and they will be able to strengthen their personal professionalism as well as improve teaching levels.
