To complete some homework after school is too normal to be mentioned for both the teachers and the students. However, this phenomenon interested some researchers, especially after the ministry of education advanced to alleviate burden on the students. Many teachers coming from basic schools and universities are engaged in it, and have got some meaningful conclusions.It hasn't been a long time since English became the one of the main subjects in primary school. So the researches on the design of English homework are few. Based on the analysis of the theory of pedagogy, the specialty of English, and the characteristics of pupils, I assumed to provide some requirements, including considering the intercommunity and the differences, exerting the self-determination of both the teachers and the students, developing four kinds of language skills, arousing the motivation and interest, considering proper time students should spend on, cultivating good habits and strategies when completing homework.The actualities described in this thesis are based on the case of J school, one of the best schools in Jiangsu Province. We're aiming at obtaining a comprehensive conclusion through the demonstration of three sides, which are the analysis of the record that the homework teachers assigned, students'feeling on it and the teachers' reflection.The analysis of the record shows that the four skills are regarded differently in different grades. Listening and speaking are the most important part in Grade 3(the beginning grade), and then writing and reading are becoming more and more important as the grade grow. Besides, the requirement of ideation is higher.The survey on the students are aiming at knowing their feeling on the homework, including whether the quantity is more or less, whether it's interesting or not, what's their preferring homework, what do they do when encountered problems, what should the teachers improve, etc. The main conclusions are as follows. The time most students spend on homework are less than half an hour, which is in accordance with the statute of Jiangsu Province and the saying of the teachers. The span and the diversity are increasing as the grade improving. Most students say that the quantity isn't excessive, and the homework isn't boring, but more students in Grade 5&6 are inclined to consider that the homework isn't interesting. In addition, most of the students can complete English homework quite easily. More students prefer homework as activities except those in Grade 3. They don't like the homework that asking for high ideation, and which are perfunctory, such as copying the new words and reciting the text. But all of these are necessary for them, especially the beginners. They're inclined to asking their parents for help when encountered problems, rather than solving them by looking up the dictionary. Teachers and parents should pay attention to it.The purpose that interview with the teachers is to find the cognition they hold, such as the effects of homework, their thoughts on how to design and assign the homework in the face of the diversity of the knowledge and abilities the students own, the differences among English and other subjects. Besides, students may have the circs and the imaginable problems, and be affected with parents whether involved in homework or not. What the teachers say will be compared with the conclusion of the record and the survey, and thenâ… will give some advice.At last, after comparing the actualities, which are proclaimed by demonstration from three sides, with the requirement., there are some basic conclusion and suggestion to J school.
