The philosophy for the geography curriculum of junior high school requires students to learn useful geography of the reality and for the individual's whole life as well as to construct open geography curriculum. For that reason, textbook of junior high school geography was reformed subsequently. The guiding ideology of the new teaching material is to cultivate socialist citizens and the starting point of it is to improve the quality of the citizens. The new one improves the systematic of the teaching materials,lay emphasis on mobilizing students' initiative and enthusiasm, and strengthens the ideological education of students. It reflects the time spirit. There are 939 various geographic illustrations in the new edition, which accounts for more than 50% of sheet space of the book. Thus it can be seen that the key point of junior high school geography teaching is illustrations which requires the geography teachers to study textbook carefully to know how to apply illustrations in teaching.The literature research method, experience summary method and case method are used in the process of writing this article. By experience summary method, the author summarized the superiority and function of illustrations in geography teaching of junior high school. Through literature research method, the author found out the related classification of geographic illustrations of junior high school. Combined with the object of research, the geographic illustrations are classified into geographical landscape map, map, geographic map and geographical statistical figure and cartoons. Besides, by the case method, the author summed up how to apply these maps which are frequently used in the textbook.The author thinks that different types of textbook illustrations should be applied in different way. As for geographical landscape, teacher should pay attention to combine landscape with related explanatory note in teaching process. By answering questions,students are supposed to realize intrinsic quality and learn geographic principle from pictures. In order to make students master the correct method of reading pictures,teachers are requested to set questions from easy questions to difficult ones, by this way,students will comprehend and master the methods of map reading gradually as well as improve their ability of reading maps. Teachers should help students to learn geographic sketches by deductive method or by small activity way to describe the formation process of geographical objects and geographic principle. In the teaching process of statistical figures, it is perfect for teachers to adopt the method of graphic transformation which means the geography diagram, data and statistical figure can be converted to each other. In this process, students can be cultivated with ability to draw, use analysis of the geographic chart. About geographical cartoon teaching, situational teaching models can be employed. In the scenario teaching, teachers can take advantage of geographic comic to appeal of students' enthusiasm to participate in the discussion, so they can learn to think in the discussion, at the same time, they can learn cooperative learning.
