A Study On Undergraduate Admission System Of The Top Universities In China And America

The national medium and long-term education reform and development plan outline(2010-2020),points out that it is necessary to improve the quality of higher education and to build a powerful nation of higher education.As an important part of college enrollment system,the undergraduate admission have a significant impact on the development of higher education.As a leading country in higher education,American undergraduate admission is distinctive.So it is necessary to study the American undergraduate admission system which can provide useful advice for the construction of Chinese undergraduate admission system.However,the research on undergraduate admission is broad but not deep,so this paper chose Peking university and Harvard University to make the study deep and specific.Through the comparative study of two undergraduate admission system,we can effectively grasp the similarities and differences,in order to improve and perfect the undergraduate admission system.This paper is divided into six parts :The first part is introduction which expatiates the background,significance and method,and it make inductive analysis of the relevant literature.The second part introduces the historical evolution of the undergraduate admission of Peking university and Harvard University.It introduces the work of the undergraduate admission in different times of these two universities according to the time,especially for its development and characteristics.The third part studies the undergraduate admission work of Peking university and Harvard University which includes admission institution,admission forms and admission criteria.The undergraduate admission of Harvard University is independent,but for Peking University,the undergraduate admission is just one of the three links.Different undergraduate admission forms have different evolution criteria in Peking University: the college entrance examination is the main criteria for the unified college entrance examination admission;Unripe,autonomous enrollment standards mainly include academic performance,discipline specialty,comprehensive quality three aspects.But in Harvard University,The evolution criteriaof different admission forms is about the same.And according to the content Harvard undergraduate admission criteria can be divided into two aspects,academic and nonacademic criteria.The fourth part is the change trends of the undergraduate admission in Peking University and Harvard which can help us have clear understanding on the problems of our undergraduate admission system and accurately grasp the direction of reform.The fifth part is the opinion of undergraduate admission system reform in colleges and universities,which include completing the admission institutions,improving the independent recruitment of students test,diversified admission criteria,realizing the connection of high school and college education and solving the problem of fairness in undergraduate admissions.
