The learning of Chinese language is becoming more popular in the globalization context. The increasing number of students going to china and learn Chinese has fully proved that China and Chinese language has more influences than ever. Meanwhile, more and more Chinese language teachers are willing to go abroad and teach Chinese language. In 2015, the author went to New Zealand and taught Chinese in the local schools for a year. According to the real practice in the local primary schools and the observations, the author concluded that the focus of the Chinese language teaching in New Zealand is the vocabulary teaching. Thus, researches and teaching designs in this area were conducted and highlighted in this paper.In the first part, it discussed about the primary school education features in NZ based on the observations of teaching and interviews of some other Chinese teachers. The uniqueness of the NZ primary school education was discussed in four aspects: the teaching audience, the goal, the environment as well as the importance of the Chinese class.In the second part, based on the uniqueness of the NZ primary school education, the curriculum of the Chinese class as well as the surveys among Chinese teachers, the author has reached a conclusion about the current situations and the problems that lies in the Chinese teaching: higher attention to the listening and speaking skills while lower focus on the writing and reading skills; less revision; classroom games cannot help with the vocabulary teaching; the lack of explaining and practicing in the usage and the collocation of vocabulary; the loose connection between the vocabulary and the example sentences.In the third part, some strategies for the vocabulary teaching were discussed, aiming to offer a practical solution for the local Chinese teaching.In the forth part, the teaching design for vocabulary teaching was discussed and put into test to see whether the design was reliable.In this paper, all the researches conducted and the solutions come up were based on the real practice and the observations, the interviews with the Chinese teachers as well as the local Chinese curriculum, and it is to be sure of high importance for some relative studies.
