New Chinese Readings is a set of extra-curricular readings for students in primary school,middle school and high school. After several years of revision by famous Chinese educators like Wang Shangwen, Wu Fuhui and Wang Xiaoming, it was published at the end of 20 th century when Chinese education was discussed and criticized by the whole society. It has been widely accepted by the society and praised as “the best readings of humanistic enlightenment ever since the May 4th movement”. Its emergence has met the development trend of the times and the internal need of the Chinese educational reform. Extra-curricular reading is the inevitable course for students to promote spiritual and cultural quality. New Chinese Readings possesses important reference significance to the development of Chinese education, with its new educational concepts, distinct taste in selecting articles, creative reading model and unique compilation format. With rich connotation of Chinese education,New Chinese Readings proposes that our children should be edified by masterpieces. Three concepts advocated by New Chinese Readings are very instructive. The first is that the purpose of Chinese education is to realize cultivation of man by absorbing the essence of the classics. The second is that Chinese reading skills require students to have an open view while reading and cultivate personalized reading. The third is that teaching materials should be organized in a progressive way and able to rebuild spiritual prototype.However, as extra-curricular materials, New Chinese Readings has made some detours in the course of educational practice. In order to fulfill the real value of New Chinese Readings, we need to unchain ourselves from utilitarian thoughts and establish broad view of Chinese. In addition,we also need to enhance the guidance to reading skills, cultivate good reading habits and select articles elaborately, aiming to improve students' esthetic ability.The thesis has introduced the background information of New Chinese Readings and further discussed its views on the purpose of Chinese education, Chinese reading skills and Chinese teaching materials. Moreover, it also has proposed several feasible strategies to realize the value of New Chinese Readings in Chinese education so as to attract more attention of teachers and students, hoping it can realize the teaching value of Chinese extra-curricular readings and make it deserve the name of humanistic readings.
