Evaluating the processes and results of quality in higher education is the main concern from the early stage of higher education.Beginning in the Middle Ages,European higher education has developed two key patterns,which self-control of British colleges and universities as one of them.In order to ensure and improve the quality of higher education,which can better meet the changing needs of stakeholders;adopting effective ways which make the universities understand their work and how they meet the needs of stakeholders are very important.And the effective method is the self-evaluation of universities,which is one of the core activities of the quality assurance process and the important work of higher education quality assurance and continuous improvement.Any British higher education quality assessment must be based on self-evaluation.It can be shown that British colleges and Universities pay much attention to self-evaluation.And self-evaluation system of British colleges and Universities has been more complete through a long-term development.Therefore,this paper aims to have a reflection on the current self-evaluation of C hinese colleges and universities by combining the development of British colleges and Universities self-evaluation with the domestic status and problems in universities.This paper analyzed the development history of self-evaluation in British universities,introduced the main information of universities' assessment including purposes,main content,process of self-evaluation and usage of evaluation results,and use the case study of the University of Southampton to more specifically show British universities' self-assessment situation.After the study,the following features of the British universities' self-evaluation were concluded: the cooperation pattern of inside and outside universities;highlight the participant of students;pay attention to the self-evaluation data;highlight the partnership of colleges and universities.And some problems were found in the British universities' self-evaluation in practice: the unclear purpose;over impact of external factors on self-evaluation;lack of time for self-evaluation resource;lack of reality in self-evaluation results.Finally,according to the present situation of the self-evaluation in colleges and universities,puts forward three suggestions for improvement,so,Build in line with the evaluation indicator system of university internal;Strengthening the dominant position of University in self evaluation;Pay attention to the evaluation results and improve t he evaluation mechanism.
