Mind map can not only help students to better observe and evaluate the geographical location of a region, but also engage them in the interesting process of critical thinking such as guessing and imaging, which also helps them to analyze the regional characteristics of a comprehensive case. By encouraging students to draw out the map and pattern diagram, it improves students' ability to concentrate on the most important patterns of a diagram without missing the partial details. In a word, it plays a critical role in improving junior middle school students' performance in geography.In this article, the author uses methods such as literature research method,experience method, observation method, experimental method and questionnaire. This paper mainly includes the following contents: the theoretical basis and connotation of mind map; teaching value; how mind map improves the geographical ability; an empirical research on improving geography ability using mind map;, a summary of useful teaching strategies.Through long-term teaching practice and reflection, the author sums up the following five teaching strategies to improve the geography abilities: designing mind mapping instruction program; training activities and teaching methods according to the requirements of the geography teaching development; flexible teaching strategies;creating a pleasant and favorable teaching atmosphere to stimulate students' thinking;evaluation based on encouraging strategy.Finally, through the analysis of junior high school students' attitude and journals,with the close comparative analysis and survey on their geographical abilities before and after the research, this paper is trying to demonstrate the use of mind map in terms of improving junior high school students' geographical abilities and the teachers' teaching strategies.
